Qatar has two operators, Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar, both selling visitor plans, and Hamad International offers free airport wifi that is genuinely usable. That combination means the right answer depends almost entirely on how long you are on the ground.

For a transit or a short stopover, do not plan on buying a local SIM. Clearing immigration, finding a counter and registering eats the time you were going to spend seeing the Corniche. Either use the airport wifi, or activate an eSIM before you board in India so data is live the moment you land. This is the classic case where an eSIM's convenience is the entire product.

For a stay of several days, a local visitor plan is a reasonable buy and coverage across Doha, Lusail, Al Khor and the main desert routes is good. Roaming on an Indian carrier is also worth checking, since Qatar features in many Gulf roaming packs.

There is one country-specific caveat that matters to Indian travellers calling home. Qatar's telecom regulation has historically restricted voice and video calling over some consumer internet applications, in the same broad way the region does generally. The picture has shifted over time, so check the current position with the Communications Regulatory Authority rather than assuming your usual app will place calls, and plan on messaging as the reliable channel.

Qatar is the destination on this list where insurance moves from prudent to procedural. Qatar has introduced a requirement for visitors to hold health insurance covering the period of their stay, with cover expected to come from an insurance company registered with the relevant Qatari authority. That is a materially different situation from most of the region, where insurance is simply a good idea.

Because the requirement's scope, the registered-insurer list and the categories it applies to are set by Qatari authorities and have been revised since introduction, the only correct advice is to verify before you buy. Check the Ministry of Public Health's guidance and the government services portal for the current position, and confirm with the specific insurer that its policy is accepted for Qatari entry purposes. Buying a policy that meets a general description is not the same as buying one that satisfies the requirement, and nothing on this page can promise a particular policy will be accepted.

Beyond the entry question, the ordinary reasons apply and have a Gulf flavour. Summer heat illness is a real presentation, desert activities such as dune driving and quad biking sit inside adventure exclusions, and healthcare for visitors is private and expensive. If Doha is a stopover on separately ticketed flights, trip-disruption cover is again the clause that earns its money.

Hamad is close to the city, which is the main reason Doha works as a stopover destination at all. The Doha Metro's Red Line runs to a station at the airport and continues through the central corridor towards Msheireb, where the network's lines meet. For a traveller with a cabin bag and a few hours, that is a genuinely fast way into town.

Karwa taxis operate from managed ranks, ride-hailing is available, and hotel transfers are common. If you are travelling with family and luggage, or arriving very late, a pre-booked transfer is the calm option; the Metro is the efficient one.

Transit passengers should note the practical distinction: if you are staying airside, none of this applies and the airport itself is designed for long waits. If you intend to leave the terminal, you are entering the country, which means the entry rules and the insurance requirement apply to you the same as any visitor. Qatar has also promoted stopover programmes attached to its national carrier, which package a hotel with an extended layover — worth checking against your own booking rather than assuming eligibility.

Doha rewards a tightly planned day more than a loosely planned week. A stopover works best built around one museum, one desert or waterfront experience and one meal, with transport decided in advance.

The season matters more here than in most of the destinations on this list. Qatar's summer heat genuinely limits outdoor plans, and the cooler months are when the city's outdoor life, the Corniche, the souq and the desert make sense.

Qatar has operated visa-waiver arrangements covering a wide list of nationalities including Indian passport holders, typically conditional on a confirmed return ticket and confirmed accommodation. Qatar also operates an online platform for entry permits and related services, and there are provisions under which travellers holding valid visas or residence permits from certain other countries may be eligible for visa on arrival. All of these carry conditions and have been revised.

Because the arrangements are conditional rather than automatic, the documents matter. A confirmed onward or return ticket and a genuine accommodation booking are the two things most often checked, and a hotel booking that is cancelled after arrival is treated as exactly what it is.
