Low cloud, heavy rain, and snow close Bhuntar regularly. The exposed windows are the monsoon, roughly July to September, and the winter months when snow and valley fog sit on the approach. Decisions are usually taken on the morning of travel because they depend on what visibility in the valley is doing at the time, so holding a ticket is not the same as arriving. Regular travellers on this corridor often fly one way and drive the other, or build a spare day into the return.

The practical consequence is a sequencing rule: do not put a Bhuntar flight on the last day before an international connection or a fixed commitment in Delhi. When it cancels, the fallback is a long road journey out through Mandi and Chandigarh — an overnight problem, not an afternoon one.

The overnight bus from Delhi remains the default for most Indian travellers: Volvo and state-run services leave in the evening from the Kashmere Gate area, run roughly twelve to fourteen hours depending on road conditions, and set you down at Manali's own bus stand with no transfer at the far end. It saves a hotel night on a short trip and, for a group carrying luggage, is usually the lower-cost option overall.

Demand peaks twice: the May-June school holidays, and the late-December snow window when Solang and the Atal Tunnel side draw crowds. Both windows tighten road transport, taxis, and hotel availability as much as they tighten flights. October and November are the clearest, quietest stretch once the rains have gone, and March into April is the other shoulder.

The monsoon is a route-specific hazard rather than merely a wet season. The Mandi-Kullu stretch of the highway, and the Pandoh-Aut section in particular, has been repeatedly blocked by landslides and washouts in recent years, which affects the bus and the Chandigarh drive alike — the whole corridor, not just the flight.
